PURI ARTS
PERFORMANCE, RITUALS AND WORKSHOPS FOR COMMUNITY HEALING
Our Mission

Puri Arts
Dohee Lee Puri Arts is the producing organization of performance artist, Dohee Lee. Our mission is to create and tour multidisciplinary, community performance rituals under the direction of Dohee Lee. We utilize art to heal fractured relationships in the urban environment – relationships between humans and the land and between individuals and their communities. Dohee's work arises from her intensive training in the practices of mudang (Korean shamanism). This tradition combines singing, dancing, drumming, costuming into village healing gatherings. Dohee Lee Puri Arts applies this ancient, indigenous approach to community healing to our urban village of Oakland.
Puri Art applies an arts-based strategy for empowering voices, community and power building in Oakland refugee and immigrant communities. We lead an extended process of taking personal journey stories and turning those stories into individual and group performance. The development process and public performances empowers individuals and communities where culturally they may never before have been able to express their hopes, wants and needs. This creates a platform of visibility for the groups we work with and ultimately leads to communities being able to organize, advocate and activate for their own needs.
